A couple of years ago, I read Steven Sample's book, A Contrarian's Guide to Leadership, in which one of the chapters was titled, "You are who you read."
Where we live today, there are many different voices we can allow into our lives through the various sources we check out:
And It certainly is true that these voices have influence in who we are becoming. They speak into our values, our decisions, and our attitudes, and yet we sometimes don't take much time to discern the value of the voices we allow to influence us.
The Apostle Paul, who wrote a good chunk of the New Testament of the Bible, knew the importance of the examples we choose because they can lead us in dramatically different directions…
17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven.
Between Palm Sunday weekend and Pentecost Sunday we are considering the lives of many people who encountered Jesus - people whose lives may have something to say to ours, examples we can follow in that they met with Jesus and were changed by him! Each weekend, join us in the journey of Encountering Jesus!
