The Bible is an eastern book. There are styles and conventions common to eastern wisdom literature that our western minds often fail to grasp. The story of King David is a historical account, but it is also an eastern narrative designed to challenge our hearts with character growth. Thomas Paine, the English intellectual once said, “Reputation is what men and women think of us. Character is what God and the angels know of us.” Within the story of David are hidden forty key concepts intended to move us beyond the ideals of personal achievement and self-actualization and into that amazing state where we become, like David, people with hearts after God.
