Yesterday, we started our first ever Kids' Own Worship (KOW) worship team!
Seven children between the ages of 10-12 met with Sherryne Belbeck and spent 1.5 hours talking about worship and what it means to lead worship. All the children have different gifts and talents and it was fun to watch them "perform" together. We have singers, guitar players, a keyboard player and even a drummer!! (Wow! Now we need to find a drum kit:) But there is always room for more!
Where did all this come from?
After a year with our new curriculum (Tru by David C Cook), we have been challenged over and over by the Lord, to give the children of KOW
more opportunities to hear the Holy Spirit and to act upon his
leading.
One of the great places in a Christian's life to put this into
action is in our worship. Often are we prompted by the Holy Spirit in our worship
and yet we find it difficult to listen and obey. We may even
ignore the prompting because we are afraid of those around us and their
reactions. One of the great things about children is that they are
usually more willing to try new things and when they feel safe to
experiment, they will. So we decided to put together a worship service led by kids for kids!
Once a month, on our community weekends when there is
only one service and therefore all the children are together, we will be making some joyful noise to the Lord! Each
month we will highlight a different form or style of worship
for the children to try. Everything from painting canvases, dancing, being on our knees, contemplative prayer and whatever else the Holy Spirit prompts us to share with the kids will be done. And we will do our best to create a safe space
for the children to begin to hear the Holy Spirit's promptings and be
set free to act upon them.
Yesterday was the beginning of a whole new experience both for the kids leading and the kids participating once a month! And we look forward to what the Lord is going to do through our worship desire to worship Him!
